What is Presbycusis?

As we get older, it’s pretty common to notice our hearing isn’t what it used to be. This is called presbycusis (prez-bih-kyoo-sis) and it usually sneaks up on us over the years. It tends to hit both ears pretty evenly, so you’re not alone in this! Lots of older adults deal with it, especially when it gets tricky to catch those high-pitched sounds or keep up with conversations in noisy places.

Spotting the Signs

Knowing the signs of presbycusis can really help you take charge. Here are some common things to look out for:

  • Always asking people to repeat themselves
  • Finding it tough to keep up with chats in noisy places like restaurants or parties
  • Thinking everyone’s mumbling
  • Cranking up the volume on the TV or radio
  • Struggling to hear women’s or kids’ voices
  • Feeling wiped out after long talks because you’re really concentrating to liste

Why Hearing Matters

Good hearing is super important for keeping our relationships strong and enjoying the things we love to do. But when hearing loss kicks in, it can make people want to step back from socializing, leading to some pretty lonely feelings. The good news? There are plenty of great solutions out there to help! If you’re noticing any changes in your hearing, don’t wait too long—just book an appointment with a healthcare provider or hearing specialist. They’re there to help you figure out the best way to keep your hearing in tip-top shape.
